Under a Tree: A Story About Perception, Judgment, and Personal Truth
A timeless parable about how the same action is perceived differently by different people, and why your truth matters more than their judgment.
The Story: Different Perspectives, Same Man
The Scene Under the Tree
Under a tree, a man was sleeping.
He had probably been asleep for a couple of hours, because the tree’s shade was no longer in his favour. The sun was now directly above him, almost slapping his face with heat. Yet, it didn’t bother him even a bit.
At first, a farmer passed by. He noticed the man and judged that he must be a farmer too—otherwise, why would someone sleep in broad daylight? He must have been exhausted from early morning work. With that thought, the farmer moved on.
Soon after, a saint crossed the same path. He looked at the man and decided that this person must be a great sage—someone who had renounced everything. Even the harsh sunlight could not disturb his peace. Sleeping at such an hour, unaffected, surely meant spiritual detachment.
Later, a drunkard walked by. He saw the man and burst into laughter. Loudly, he mocked him, saying that anyone sleeping at this time of the day, unbothered by the sun, must be heavily drunk and wasted.
The Hidden Truth Behind Judgment
The Man Was Simply Sleeping
Now, let’s leave the man aside for a moment.
Can you see, my dear friend? The man was simply sleeping. He remained the same the entire time. Nothing about him changed. Yet, three different people saw him through three different lenses. Furthermore, each judged him based on their own world, their own experiences, and their own understanding.
This is the fundamental truth about human perception: we don’t see the world as it is, but as we are.
How This Applies to Your Life
No matter what you or I do, the world will do the same. People around you—your circle, strangers, well-wishers—will judge. Sometimes it will be positive, sometimes negative. Sometimes right, sometimes completely wrong.
Moreover, the people who criticize you are often projecting their own insecurities, beliefs, and limitations onto your actions. They’re not judging you; they’re judging their version of you. Additionally, this realization can be incredibly liberating if you let it.
What I’ve Learned About Judgment and Acceptance
Take What Serves You, Leave The Rest
In the end, it is up to you whether you listen to them or let their words pass by.
Personally, I would suggest this approach:
✓ Take what is constructive. Listen to feedback that helps you grow and improve.
✗ Ignore what is destructive. Release criticism that comes from judgment rather than genuine care.
Remember: Nothing good ever comes from worrying about constant criticism or judgmental opinions.
Finding Peace In Your Own Truth
The real lesson here is similar to what I’ve learned from reflecting on life’s challenges—peace comes from knowing your own truth, regardless of how others perceive it. Furthermore, this doesn’t mean ignoring all feedback. Instead, it means being discerning about which voices deserve your attention.
As we transition from 2025 to 2026, perhaps this is the perfect moment to let go of others’ judgments. Consequently, we can start fresh with a focus on what truly matters to us.
Starting 2026 With a Clean Slate
Today, as we say goodbye to 2025, I invite you to reflect on this simple story. Think about the judgments you’ve internalized from others. Consider whether they truly represent your reality or merely reflect someone else’s perspective.
As you enter 2026, let your personal journey and growth be guided by your own values, not the opinions of those passing by. After all, they’re only seeing a snapshot—they don’t know your full story.
If you’d like to share your own experiences with judgment or self-acceptance, I’d love to hear them. Additionally, feel free to explore more personal stories and reflections on my blog.
Happy New Year, friend. Here’s to 2026—a year of authenticity, clarity, and freedom from unnecessary judgment. 🌟
